Having a baby is a huge life change that affects your body, relationships and your pocket book. You’ve probably been going to regular doctor’s appointments and are shopping for all the extra furniture, gadgets and gear to make your transition to parenthood a smooth one. With all the preparation that goes into welcoming a new bundle of joy, there is one thing that often gets overlooked and you absolutely must do before baby arrives.
You must replace your mainstream household cleaners for safe, organic cleaners.
The toxins hiding in your everyday cleaners are dangerous for both you and your baby. You can’t count on cleaners that claim to be “natural” either. “Natural” is not a regulated term, and those cleaners could contain almost anything. To ensure the cleaners you are using in your home and around your baby are safe, look for the USDA Certified Organic seal. This seal guarantees that products are made to the highest organic standards. Greenshield Organic products proudly carry the USDA Certified Organic seal and are safe for you, your baby, your pets and the planet.
What dangerous toxins are hiding in your cleaners? We created a list.
PHTHALATES. Phthalates are found in most fragrances. Companies do not have to disclose fragrance ingredients, and they could contain almost anything. Phthalates are endocrine disruptors, which have been associated with infertility. In contrast, fragrances derived from essential oils are not only safe, they may even improve your mood.
TRICLOSAN. Triclosan has recently been banned by the FDA, but many of your older cleaners and soaps may still contain it. It is an anti-bacterial that can promote the growth of drug-resistant bacteria. Triclosan is also suspected of being an endocrine disruptor and carcinogen.
QUATERNARY AMMONIUM COMPOUNDS. Found in most fabric softeners and anti-bacterial cleaners, Quaternary ammonium compounds also promote growth of drug-resistant bacteria and is a skin irritant.
2-BUTOXYETHANOL. This is a solvent found in most window and all-purpose cleaners that most commonly causes sore throats when inhaled. At high levels 2-Butoxyethanol can contribute to narcosis, pulmonary edema and severe liver and kidney damage.
AMMONIA. Ammonia makes glass surfaces sparkle, but it is also a powerful irritant and almost always inhaled. People who are regularly exposed to ammonia offend develop asthma and chronic bronchitis.
CHLORINE. Otherwise known as bleach. Often found in scouring powders, chlorine is also a respiratory irritant, which also may be a serious thyroid disruptor.
These are just some among a host of toxins in mainstream cleaners and detergents. Companies are not required by law to list all the ingredients on their cleaning products, so choosing the right ones proves quite a task. Luckily, there’s a solution.
