We’ve enjoyed coconut milk in curries and the occasional pina colada. Perhaps it’s the fact that it comes in a can or only available in the foreign food aisle, but coconut milk is a seriously under-utilized ingredient that should be a pantry staple. And it’s not just for food. We’ll explore how coconut milk can be utilized in your daily beauty regimen and beyond!
Coconut milk in your desserts. Coconut milk makes a great milk substitute in cakes and other sweet goodies, but did you know you can make whipped coconut cream? Here’s how you do it. Put your can of coconut milk in the refrigerator for at least 8 hours (preferably longer). The cream will separate from the water. Discard the water, and put the cream into a bowl. Then begin whipping with beaters or your stand mixer just like you’d make whipped cream. You can add sugar if you’d like, but coconut milk is sweet already, so there’s really no need.
Coconut milk on your face. We found several lotions and scrubs utilizing coconut milk as a key ingredient. Our favorite was a Honey Face Wash from Hello Glow:
- ¼ cup raw honey
- ¼ cup coconut milk
- 1 Tbsp liquid castile soap
Combine ingredients in bottle and shake until mixture becomes foamy. Massage into face and neck, but be careful to not get any in your eyes. Rinse with warm water.
Coconut milk in your hair. Many people use coconut oil in their hair for various purposes, but when you are looking for something nourishing without all the excess oil – coconut milk to the rescue! Hello Glow also had a great dandruff shampoo recipe featuring coconut milk.
- ¼ cup coconut milk
- ½ liquid castile soap
- ½ cup vegetable glycerin
- 2 tsp almond oil
- 10 drops tea tree oil
Combine and shake up before each use.
