There is no time that we are more concerned with the chemicals and products we use in our homes than when we are bringing home a new baby. While we might not be extremely vigilant about the lotions and washes and clothing we put on our own bodies, when it comes to the bodies of our babies, we want to take every step possible to keep their sensitive skin healthy, clean, and free from potential toxins. But how do you wade through the mountains of products -- both necessary and unnecessary -- that are designed for babies? How do you choose which products are safest for your little one’s delicate body? Since our Social Media Community Manager recently had a baby, we thought we’d pull together some prime picks that are safest for new babies to help her and YOU!
Our favorite body products for baby come from Burt’s Bees. Their Baby Bee Shampoo and Wash and their Baby Bee Nourishing Lotion are wonderfully soothing and hydrating products for baby. Both are free from parabens, petroleum, and phthalates and are over 98% natural. They are also hypo-allergenic and effective. Even better, the EWG has given them both a winning score of 1. Both the wash and the lotion are available in scented and unscented varieties, and the unscented variety has a natural subtle scent of honey. Used together, they will keep baby’s skin clean, soft, and hydrated safely.
After bath time, the first thing that touches your baby’s skin is the diaper that will keep that little bum dry. If you’ve chosen the disposable diaper route, there are many green options out there. Two of the best are Bamboo Nature and Earth’s Best Tender Care. Both are highly rated and are chlorine-, latex-, perfume-, and dye-free. The Baby Gear Lab voted Bamboo Nature as their Editor’s Choice and Earth’s Best as their Best Value.
Laundry is an essential part of having a baby, and our Baby Free & Clear detergent is perfect for all of that amassing baby laundry. Made from plant-based materials, our formula is gentle on clothing but tough on stains. It’s phosphate and petrochemical free, and, as always, free from parabens and phthalates. There are no harsh chemicals in the detergent and that means none linger on all those sweet little clothes that come into close contact with baby’s skin.
Babies love to put anything and everything into their mouths, and that’s when we really start to worry about what potential toxins are lurking in their toys and teethers and pacifiers. If your little one likes a pacifier, the UMMY by Natursutten is a BPA-free option free from artificial coloring, chemical softeners, parabens, and phthalates. It’s manufactured as one piece so there is virtually no risk for choking. And, if your little one is beyond pacifier age and is craving something to chew on, one of the most popular baby toys that is safe for all of that mouthing and teething is Sophie the Giraffe. This toy is 100% natural rubber and free from phthalates. It’s soft and it squeaks, and, let’s be honest, it’s adorable!
